Birthstone: January Starstone: Capricorn It's name is derived from its resemblance to the deep red seeds of a pomegranate fruit and comes from the Latin word 'granatus' meaning grain or seed. The Garnet is said to represent friendship, loyalty, and fidelity, ensure good health and protect during travel. In ancient times it was thought to be connected to the blood and assumed to have medicinal powers protecting against poison and depression. The garnet originated in Sri Lanka, but is also found in South America and the United States. Although thought of as a red gemstone the garnet comes in a variety of colours.
